Dairy calves (young bovine animals up to 6 months of age) are protected in the EU under Council Directive 2008/119/EC, but those legal requirements remain minimal.

Welfare issues for dairy calves relate to early colostrum intake, group housing, bedding provision and transport time.

Specialist calf rearers have an important role to play in the utilisation of non-replacement calves from the dairy industry and in protecting their welfare.

The Good Calf Award is designed to showcase companies who are committing to rear non-replacement calves from the dairy industry in higher welfare systems.
