Compassion in World Farming is one of the latest organisations to have signed up to the ‘Milan Protocol’. The Protocol is an international agreement which aims to address the challenge of sustainability in the food chain.
The initiative was launched at the 2013 Barilla Centre for Food and Nutrition (BCFN) International Forum. It calls upon governments, political institutions, international organisations involved in food production and civil society to take an active role in addressing the challenges of food and nutrition by contributing to the document, which will be used as a basis for discussion at Expo 2015 to be held in Milan.
The ‘Expo Milano 2015’, themed “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”, will address the topic of food as a primary resource for our survival, bringing together more than 140 countries from around the world. The Protocol will provide a platform for discussion and will aim to stimulate the necessary in-depth analyses, so that everyone can share the choices and strategies needed to ensure a sustainable future for the planet, people and farm animals.
The Milan Protocol will connect citizens and policy makers to address the issue of food sustainability with a triple objective:
- To promote healthy lifestyles and fight obesity
- To promote sustainable agriculture
- To reduce food waste by 50% by 2020
The final version of the Protocol will be presented at Expo Milano 2015. Click here to find out more.
