Compassion was invited to take part in the 2014 China Animal Welfare Forum which took place on 11th October in Beijing.
Compassion’s CEO, Philip Lymbery, gave a keynote speech on ‘Why animal welfare society is crucial for China’ and presented the 2014 Good Pig Production Awards.
For the past three years, Compassion has been working with the government-backed organisation - the International Cooperation Committee of Animal Welfare (ICCAW) - in China to help bring higher welfare practices into local pig production.
This work culminated in the launch of the Good Pig Production Awards this year which recognise Chinese producers for improving pig welfare, food safety and environmental standards.
A total of 62 applications were received, showing the level in interest for meeting higher welfare standards in China, with 13 successful winners, indicating the level of difficulty in attaining an award.

Other speakers at the conference included:

- Anders Lennartsson, Manager of Sustainable Development, IKEA
- Martin Barker, General Manager, Midland Pig Producers
Compassion was also delighted to present German Wholesaler BreFood with a Rabbit Innovation Award at the conference, for working with its partners in China to develop a cage-free, higher welfare production system for the meat rabbits in its supply chain.
