Elior Group has become the first contract caterer to sign up to the new welfare requirements for broiler chickens, across its global operations.
Their aim is to work with their suppliers in all their markets, and with external experts including Compassion, to ensure that by 2025 they meet both the US and European criteria for improved broiler welfare.
This latest commitment to animal welfare follows their commitment to use only cage-free eggs across their global supply chain (for both whole egg and egg ingredient) by 2025.
The new broiler welfare requirements include, amongst others, a move to slower growing breeds and humane slaughter.
Elior Group recognises that progress will vary by region, for example new slaughter techniques are not currently available in Europe, but they are starting the process now to help map out how they can achieve these commitments by 2025.
Hayley Roberts, Food Business Manager at Compassion said: “We’ve worked with Elior Group for a number of years now and it’s great to see that their new farm animal welfare policy includes these ambitious targets for broiler welfare improvement.
"The fact that their commitment is global is even more impressive and we hope is the sign that other companies will soon follow their lead.”
