We are pleased to announce that multinational catering company, Autogrill, has made a public commitment to source only cage-free eggs across Europe by 2025.
This commitment includes both shell eggs and egg products sourced by the company, and follows their decision to phase out caged shell eggs in Italy in 2009, for which they received a Good Egg Award.
This latest announcement is particularly important, as Autogrill – besides being a key player in the bars and restaurants sector in Europe - is the first Italian company in the sector to commit to both cage-free shell eggs and egg products across its entire European operations.
Confining birds in cages is highly detrimental to their welfare and we welcome Autogrill’s decision to move to cage-free production, following collaboration with Compassion and other NGOs.
Elisa Bianco, Food Business Manager for Compassion in Italy said: “We are extremely pleased with Autogrill’s decision to phase out caged eggs. This move demonstrates how the bars and restaurants sector in Italy is finally addressing consumer demand for higher welfare standards.
We will continue to support Autogrill in their transition and we hope that their commitment will encourage other companies in the sector to follow their excellent example”.
