The popular UK casual dining restaurant chain, Fridays, have signed up to the Better Chicken Commitment. This latest pledge follows on from their commitment in 2018 to transition to be cage-free across both their whole and ingredient eggs which won them a Good Egg Award.
Following recent commitments from KFC France and Burger King UK, they join a growing list of companies who recognise the importance of higher welfare chicken by providing them with more space to live (stocking density to meet 30kg/m2 or less), access to perches, pecking substrates and natural light, and using breeds with better welfare outcomes.
Fridays have worked hard to review their supply base and have actively participated in constructive industry discussions, such as Compassion’s European Broiler Forum. This will put them in a good position to progress with their journey to implementation.
Dr Tracey Jones, Global Director of Food Business at Compassion in World Farming: “We congratulate Fridays for making this commitment to higher welfare chicken, especially in this unsettling period resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. Responsible sourcing which incorporates the welfare of farm animals has never been more important and we look forward to supporting Fridays on their road to implementation.”
