Madeo (Italy) Announces New Cage-free Policy for Pigs
Published 22/05/2024
Italian producer Madeo, renowned for its high standards in animal welfare, has just published its new animal welfare policy for white pig production. This policy mirrors the rigorous standards already in place for their black pig production, emphasizing humane and sustainable farming practices.
Madeo’s new policy for white pigs includes cage-free environments, outdoor access, free insemination, and a strict prohibition on mutilations, including teeth clipping and tail docking, measures that reflect Madeo’s ongoing commitment to animal welfare.
Madeo's relationship with Compassion in World Farming, facilitated by The Compleat Food Group, began in 2016 with Compassion's initial visit to Madeo's facilities, marking the start of a fruitful collaboration. As a result of their stringent welfare practices, Madeo received the Good Sow Commendation in 2016 and the Good Pig Award (GPA) in 2017 for their black pig production.
Compassion’s Head of Food Business Europe, Louise Valducci commented:“Madeo’s continued investment in animal welfare is cause for sincere congratulations. Their dedication to extending their higher welfare practices beyond their existing rigorous standards for black pigs signals to the industry that cages are a thing of the past. As investment and market access for cage-free farming becomes the norm, Madeo is setting a great example of what farming can and should be."
