Introducing our new Podcast Series

Is it possible to reshape our food systems to improve human health, protect animal welfare, and safeguard our planet? Can we nourish a growing global population without worsening climate change? And what actionable steps can lead us to a sustainable future?

In our podcast series inspired by the new book Regenerative Farming and Sustainable Diets: Human, Animal, and Planetary Health by Routledge, we dive into these pivotal questions and more.

Every month, our 'long listens' and weekly 'ruminations' will bring you deep, candid conversations with academics, change-makers, and thought leaders worldwide, making the case for transformative shifts in agriculture and diet.

Join us as we challenge the norms of industrial farming, champion the potential of regenerative agriculture, and advocate for plant-forward diets. From voices in the fields and insights from progressive food companies to radical thinkers driving system change, each episode explores the urgent need to move away from intensive farming practices that compromise both animal welfare and environmental health.

With over 92 billion land animals raised in intensive systems each year, a third of all food lost or wasted, and millions of people facing hunger and malnutrition, our food system is at a crossroads. Yet, hope remains. Together with thought leaders, authors, and visionary entrepreneurs, our podcast envisions a path forward, exploring practical, sustainable solutions that put health—human, animal, and planetary—at the heart of the future of food.

Ruminations

Welcome to the debut episode of Ruminations, our weekly, bite-sized podcast series from Compassion in World Farming. Here, we spotlight key insights for a future-fit food system, with a strong focus on advancing farm animal welfare.

In this episode, Dan McAlpine, Senior Food Business Manager, introduces the Spotlight table—which compares UK retailers’ policies on broiler chicken welfare and examines whether their standards for indoor fresh chicken meet the Better Chicken Commitment criteria, providing listeners with a clear picture of which retailers are prioritising welfare in their sourcing.

Compassion's Head of Research - Food Business, Amelie Legrand, talks us through a new report Food businesses paving the way for a cage-free Europe that highlights how some European food companies are driving the shift towards cage-free production.

With millions of animals still confined in cages across Europe - and with many scientists and consumers calling for change - the report highlights the urgent need for the European Commission to fulfil its promise to introduce legislative proposals to end caged farming.
